Gorman Street robbery prompts crime alert for NCSU

From staff reportsOctober 15, 2013

— NC State University police issued an alert to the campus community Monday night after a robbery that at first was reported as a shooting in the 1700 block of Gorman Street, south of the campus.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, campus authorities said Raleigh police were investigating a shooting in the block, which is between Burt and Conifer drives.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said call-takers had been told there was a shooting, but officers at the scene found that one of two victims jumped from a second-story window to escape the robbers and cut his leg in the process.

City police, the university department advised, were asking for any information that could help them locate three suspects.

The incident had no known connection to N.C. State, police said, other than being nearby.

The alert came the same day as one about a reported attempted robbery and assault Sunday night that police said they later had determined to be false.

The alert they issued about 2:30 a.m. Monday, said a woman reported that a man had approached her while she was walking on Morrill Drive about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, demanded money and began beating her on the head.

“We have determined that to be a false report,” Capt. Ian Kendrick said Tuesday.
