Deadline for NC tax filing extension is midnight tonight

Posted by John Murawski on October 15, 2013

North Carolina taxpayers who received an extension to file their tax returns have until midnight tonight to file their state income taxes.

Mailed tax returns must be postmarked by Oct. 15 and emailed tax returns must be sent by midnight to the N.C. Department of Revenue.

The extensions were granted six months ago to 328,066 taxpayers who were unable to meet the April 15 filing deadline. The revenue department does not have information on how many of those extensions have since been filed.

The penalty for missing the Oct. 15 extended deadline is 5 percent of the amount of the tax bill within the first month, and an additional 5 percent for each additional month, up to a maximum penalty of 25 percent.
