Technology from N.C. State University might just create a team of unlikely heroes from a swarm of insects.

N.C. State researchers are developing software to help map unknown and potentially dangerous environments by employing an army of insect cyborgs.

Equipped with sensors, a troupe of remote controlled "biobots" can spread in treacherous or hard to reach areas providing important and potentially lifesaving information for first responders.

Since GPS is unavailable in some situations, like a collapsed building, the system relies on radio waves instead.

The software analyzes the data from the swarm to create a rough map of the insects' surroundings. These biobots could also be equipped with sensors to detect chemical and radioactive threats.
