Duke picked to win ACC basketball title

Duke was the media’s runaway choice on Wednesday to win the ACC basketball title this season.

The Blue Devils received 50 first-place votes, out of 54, in the expanded 15-team conference race.

Duke forwards Rodney Hood and Jabari Parker were picked on the Preseason All-ACC team, with Parker as the choice for rookie of the year.

Newcomer Syracuse was voted second, and received three first-place votes, and North Carolina was picked third.

N.C. State, the preseason choice to win the league last year, was picked 10th. Miami, last year’s regular-season champion and conference tournament winner, was picked 12th.

Duke returns its starting backcourt from last year’s 30-win team, which was knocked out in the Final Eight by Louisville. Hood, a transfer from Mississippi State, and Parker, the No. 2-ranked recruit in the freshmen class, are expected to be versatile scorers for coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 34th Duke team.

Syracuse, which reached the Final Four last year, returns three starters, including forward C.J. Fair, who was the preseason choice for player of the year.

Virginia guard Joe Harris and Notre Dame guard Jerian Grant joined Fair, Parker and Hood on the first team.

Here's the predicted order of finish (first-place votes in parenthesis):

2. Syracuse (3)
3. North Carolina (1)
