RailHawks stay in postseason hunt with win

News ReleaseOctober 20, 2013

— Minnesota and Carolina each desperately needed three points to keep their 2013 Soccer Bowl hopes alive. The RailHawks got them, United didn’t.

Carolina captured its first road win of the season Saturday with a 1-0 victory against Minnesota at National Sports Center Stadium.

Midfielder Enzo Martinez delivered teh win when he unleashed a blast from distance and found the back of the net for the RailHawks (5-2-4, 17 points). Martinez found space 30 yards out from goal when he collected a loose ball and took two touches to setup his strike.

Neither team could muster much offense or drama in the final 15 minutes as Minnesota tried to compile pressure on the RailHawks defensive backline. A Pablo Campos header from a Calum Mallace corner was the only remaining chance for United (4-2-6, 14) as they could not level the score. It was Minnesota’s fifth home loss in 2013.

Martinez’s goal was reminiscent of the RailHawks first trip to Minnesota in the NASL Spring Season. In that match, Martinez scored an equalizer from 25 yards out to level the match at 2.

The RailHawks finish the NASL Fall Season with two home matches, the first on Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Atlanta Silverbacks at WakeMed Soccer Park. The season finale is at home on Nov. 2.
