The Bobcats were far more willing to take 3-pointers in this intrasquad scrimmage than they were Saturday in that exhibition against the Dallas Mavericks. Unfortunately that didnt translate to making more of them.
This scrimmage was a good indication of what a gifted leaper small forward Jeff Taylor is. Theres effortlessness about how he gets above the rim that isnt always on display in regular-season games. Definitely more there to be tapped in the future.
Shooting guard Gerald Henderson hit a blind, backward layup off a lob pass from Kemba Walker a little extra showmanship on a two-on-none.
Rookie Cody Zeller is getting comfortable taking and making that 18-footer off the elbow in game situations. He says hes made it all his life, but thats not what they needed from him at Indiana.
Theres no question center Bismack Biyombo is better this fall at catching the ball in traffic and positioning himself in a spot to make a jump hook. That might sound like a small step in his third NBA season, but thats what he needs to be some sort of factor offensively.
Power forward Jeff Adrien tried the intentionally miss a free throw to set up a teammates putback move. But Henderson missed on the dunk.
It wouldnt surprise me if Adrien, here on an unguaranteed contract, makes the regular-season roster, at least initially. With center Brendan Haywood out 12 weeks following foot surgery and Al Jefferson recovering from an ankle sprain, they dont have an abundance of big guys. Adrien is the hard-worker/good-guy type coach Steve Clifford likes at the end of the bench.
There was more zone defense played in one quarter of Wednesdays scrimmage than in a week of regular-season basketball.
Nice idea to have players and fans paired in a team skills competition. Thats the stuff that wins over fans.
Rookie James Southerland is a really good shooter, but he didnt hit them in a jump-shot contest with a little kid.
They volunteered rookies Southerland and Zeller to participate in the fitness competition jumping jacks, push-ups, bicycle kicks, etc. You knew the veterans werent going in for that after a full practice before the scrimmage started.
It seemed like there were more fans in attendance for this free event in previous years. Odd, considering the improvements the Bobcats made in their roster this off-season.
