HILLSBOROUGH — A Democratic committee will meet tonight to fill state Sen. Valerie Foushees vacant N.C. House District 50 seat.
The N.C. House District 50 Democratic Party Executive Committee meets at 7 p.m. in the Orange County Library, 137 W. Margaret Lane.
Seven candidates will have three minutes each to make their cases: Chapel Hill Town Council member Laurin Easthom, businessman Tommy McNeill, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools administrator Graig Meyer, lawyer Drew Nelson, Orange County Commissioner Bernadette Pelissier, Durham resident Travis A. Phelps, and Durham County Soil & Water District Supervisor Danielle Adams.
Foushee, a first-term representative, was appointed Sept. 8 to replace former state Sen. Ellie Kinnaird in District 23. She was sworn in Sept. 25. Kinnaird resigned in August to devote her time to helping voters prepare for the states new strict voter ID rules.
Both the House and Senate terms expire in December 2014. Staff writer Tammy Grubb
