Service alert: Apple's iOS 7.0.3 upgrade disrupts N&O apps on iPhones

From staff reportsOctober 24, 2013

The News & Observer's iPhone apps are not functioning for users who have upgraded their iPhones to iOS 7.0.3. The apps either crash or lock up at the splash screen for all McClatchy company applications from our mobile developer, Verve.

In the meantime, we encourage you to visit us via your mobile browser.

Alternatively, users who do not upgrade their iPhones to iOS 7.0.3 will continue to be able to consume content from our iPhone app. We expect this outage to continue into next week, as there is a multi-day lag between submission to Apple and approval.

The iOS software upgrade will not affect your ability to update our apps through iTunes, and we encourage you to keep your app current.

iOS 7.0.3 is a minor update that Apple released Wednesday, in which Apple pulled support for the font HelveticaNeue-Italic, a font that our iPhone apps rely on.

The release was not made available to developers ahead of time. Consequently, Verve did not discover the bug in time. Blackberry Instant Messenger for iPhone, or BBM, is among the other high profile apps affected by this.
