TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Tarik Cohen’s touchdown in overtime – his third score – lifted N.C. A&T over Florida A&M 20-13 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest on Saturday.
Cohen ran for 210 yards on 32 carries for N.C. A&T (4-3, 2-3), which broke a three-game losing streak.
At the start of the second quarter, Cohen busted through the line of Florida A&M (2-6, 1-3) for nine yards to give the Aggies an early lead. The Rattlers got a pick-six from Shaun Ward in the third quarter to tie it. Cohen then took a trick play for 27 yards to re-take the lead, but the extra point failed.
Damien Fleming hit Dewayne Harvey for an 8-yard score with 19 seconds left for the Rattlers, but the hosts missed the game-winning extra point.
In overtime, Cohen punched it in from eight yards out, while Fleming was intercepted on A&M’s possession to ensure an Aggie victory.
N.C. Central 24, Savannah State 10: Adrian Wilkins returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown to spur visiting N.C. Central.
Wilkins, who amassed 241 total yards, pulled in a 19-yard pass from Malcolm Bell midway through the third quarter to extend the Eagles lead to 21-10. He had 105 yards receiving on seven catches, 82 punt return yards and 54 kick return yards for the Eagles (4-4, 2-2 MEAC).
Savannah State (1-8, 0-5 MEAC) took the lead on a John Barron 22-yard field goal early in the opening quarter. Bell then scored on a six-yard run to give the Eagles the lead 7-3.
Savannah State took a 10-7 lead when Antonio Bostick hit Edward Lackey on a three-yard scoring strike. That held up until Wilkins’ touchdown punt return with 1:32 remaining in the first half.
Mercer 38, Campbell 31: The visiting Bears (7-1, 3-1 Pioneer) scored on its first four possessions. Campbell (1-7, 0-5) set a school Division I era (since 2008) record for team passing yards (355).
Western Carolina 27, Elon 24 (OT): Troy Mitchell threw two touchdowns as host Western Carolina (2-7, 1-4) snapped its 26-game Southern Conference losing streak.
Elon (2-7, 1-4) went 3-and-out in overtime, and John Gallagher missed his 44-yard attempt.
Appalachian State 38, Georgia Southern 14: Kameron Bryant was 27 of 33 for 381 yards with four touchdowns, two passing and two rushing for the host Mountaineers (2-6, 2-3 Southern).
Winston-Salem State 40, Livingstone 0: Rudy Johnson threw four touchdowns for the defending CIAA champions (7-1, 5-0) in Salisbury. Livingstone fell to 2-6, 1-5.
Shaw 39, Johnson C. Smith 33: The visiting Bears (5-3, 3-2 CIAA) outgained The Golden Bulls (4-4, 2-4) 214-21 yards on the ground.
Fayetteville State 43, St. Augustine 19: The host Broncos (5-3, 4-1 CIAA) led 33-0 at the half behind two touchdown passes from Derek Bryant.
Elizabeth City State 37, Chowan 31 (OT): The visiting Vikings (3-5, 3-2 CIAA) scored on a 14-yard pass from Tyrell Houghton to Javoris Bryant in overtime.
Newberry 24, UNC Pembroke 21: Corey Washington scored with one minute, ten seconds left in the game for the host Indians (7-1, 4-1 SAC).
