Jim Wilson: ‘Redskins’ disrespectful

November 3, 2013

The argument made by the writer of the Oct. 29 letter “Leave Skins alone” was flawed. “Seminoles” is the name of a Native American tribe and a source of pride for its members. “Redskins” is a pejorative inspired by skin pigmentation. Most Native Americans, and other sympathetic people, consider the name a sign of disrespect.

The NFL team’s owner, Dan Snyder, has a net worth larger than some nations. He could risk a minuscule amount of that fortune by changing the brand name to something that doesn’t offend our country’s first inhabitants (although I doubt he will).
