Roy Armstrong: Ike’s wisdom

November 4, 2013

I was glad to see the Oct. 31 letter “Not like Ike” citing quotations from President Dwight Eisenhower, in my view the finest president since World War II, certainly the most under-appreciated.

In light of this country’s massive “defense” spending and insatiable appetite for war and American military presence in 175 countries, I would add another quotation from Ike: “I hate war, as only a soldier who has lived it can, as only one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.”
