Raleigh man indicted for murder 10 months after child-abuse charge

— A Raleigh man has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of his child.

Demetrius Lashawne Morant, 29, was charged in December 2012 with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury, after the Raleigh Police Department responded to reports that Morant’s 2-month old son had sustained multiple injuries.

The child died on Oct. 8, just after his first birthday, as a result of the injuries diagnosed last December, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

A Wake County Grand Jury indicted the suspect for murder in the death, and Morant was served the indictment Monday at the Wake County Detention Center, where he has remained since his arrest on Dec. 28. He was held at the jail without bond as of Monday night.

Morant, of 5600 Oak Meadow Lane, was is a student of The Medical Arts School, according to an arrest report filed Nov. 4.
