High school football players of the week

Players of the week: Garrett Cloer and Tay Jones of Orange. Cloer completed 10 of 12 passes for 224 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-28 win against Cardinal Gibbons. Jones rushed for 229 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Play of the week: Braxton Berrios of Leesville Road scored on a 8-yard run for a 7-3 victory over Millbrook.

Defense of the week: Northern Durham scored on a kickoff return, a fumble return and an interception return during a 42-7 win against Durham Jordan.

Special teams salute: Middle Creek, which blocked two punts, recovered two fumbled punts and sacked the punter once in a 14-0 victory over Cary.

Reversal of the year: St. David’s defeated Hobgood Academy 51-14 in the first round of the independent eight-man football playoffs Friday after losing to Hobgood 73-33 during the regular season. St. David’s Melvin Briggs rushed for 201 yards in the win.

Turnaround: Wake Forest seemingly clinched a Cap Eight 4A victory over Sanderson by intercepting a fourth-down pass during the final seconds, but it fumbled. Sanderson’s Jeriko Styles scooped up the ball and scored for a 14-10 win.

Shawn Stankavage, Cardinal Gibbons: Completed 30 of 46 passes for 460 yards in a 49-28 loss to Orange. Wide receiver Dante DiMaggio had 14 catches for 271 yards.

Sean Bowman, South Granville: Rushed for 225 yards in a 62-12 win against Warren County.

Grant DeSelm, Chapel Hill: Passed for 238 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-24 overtime loss to Pittsboro Northwood. Sophomore Albert Nyamayaro had six catches for 155 yards in his first varsity game.

Kendall Hinton, Southern Durham: Completed nine of 13 passes for 196 yards in a 56-7 win against Durham Jordan.

Demetrice Massenburg, Green Hope: Gained 238 yards in a 28-7 win against Apex.

Richard Landis, North Raleigh Christian: Passed for 219 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-16 win against Fayetteville Christian.

Garrett Smith, South Johnston: Rushed for 173 yards in a 34-12 loss to Cleveland.

Damarus Williams, Fuquay-Varina: Rushed for 190 yards in a 24-13 victory over Athens Drive.

Dominique Lynch, Athens Drive: Ran for 159 yards in a 24-13 loss to Fuquay-Varina.

Ti Pinnix, Pittsboro Northwood: Passed for 182 yards in a 31-24 overtime victory over Chapel Hill.
