Regarding the Nov. 5 news story “Teacher ‘walk-in’ at schools”: Gov. Pat McCrory’s comment that educators have legitimate “gripes” belittled the concerns of teachers, parents, students and community members about the gutting of public education funding in our state. It implied a lack of respect for the protesters and a dismissive attitude toward teachers.
Furthermore, Senate leader Phil Berger’s reaction to the protests reflected a similar disrespect and, let’s face it, downright cluelessness. He characterized the walk-in events as a “gimmick” to gin up the membership of the NCAE and inflate the salaries of its executives and stated, “There is a time and place for everything – our schools are not the place for politics and our children should not be the pawns.” Indeed.
