Paul Bassett: Penalties on poor

November 6, 2013

In his Nov. 6 column “ Choosing who we are, thanks to Obamacare,” J. Peder Zane lamented policies that don’t sufficiently enact “penalties for hardship.” Either Zane is completely unaware of what’s been happening in this state or he’s just mean-spirited.

Given that our Republican legislature has done away with the earned income tax credit, cut unemployment benefits, cut public school funding, refused to expand Medicaid for the poor yet retains a tax loophole for luxury yachts, I’d say we’re doing a decent job of sticking it to the less fortunate.
