Kennedy Meeks, a freshman from Charlotte, could play a significant role in North Carolina’s deeper, bigger frontcourt.

— College basketball season is here, folks. The season begins today, finally. If you’re in the greater Triangle area, I highly recommend picking up a copy of The News & Observer, where you’ll find our annual special preview section. Here’s what the cover looks like (very cool picture from our own Chuck Liddy).

And here are some stories:

--The primary one at UNC – outside of all the drama surrounding P.J. Hairston and Leslie McDonald – is about whether the Tar Heels are built to go big again. It certainly seems that way. But, as Roy Williams says in this story, UNC needs someone to emerge and be The Man down low.

--Speaking of the man-like things … Marcus Paige, the sophomore point guard, is now the unquestioned vocal leader of this team. What a transition for him in one year, going from a freshman who was at times overwhelmed, both physically and mentally, to now being a leader in all aspects. And, oh yeah: He’s a bit bigger now, too.

--Here are some things to know about the Tar Heels, including a best-case and worst-case scenario.

--Here’s a scouting report on my projected starting five. Of course, Hairston and McDonald won’t be in it tonight or for the foreseeable future.

--Here’s a cool interactive photo gallery with some info on each UNC player.

Thanks for reading. Enjoy.
