Three die in Harnett County crash, two left in critical condition

From staff reportsNovember 10, 2013

— An early-morning highway crash on Sunday killed three young people and left two teenagers in critical condition.

Shane Mitchell Garner, 23; Austin Ferrell, 20, and Casey Edens, 16, all of Harnett County, died in the crash. Ashley Zimmer and Marina Troyano of Fuquay-Varina, 17, were both listed in critical condition at Wake Medical Center.

The car struck a tree on Neills Creek Road near Buies Creek and caught fire on impact.

The Highway Patrol is considering the crash to be alcohol-related. Early investigations showed that before the collision, Garner, who was at the wheel of a white 2013 Silverado truck, drove past a police checkpoint at about 2:30 a.m. on US Highway 421 in Lillington near Campbell University.

The vehicle sped away before veering left and hitting a tree.

The investigation was continuing Sunday.
