Former Durham officer charged with murder of his wife

— Police have released the names of a victim and a suspect in a homicide discovered Friday.

Officers found the body of Maxine Burns, 50, when they responded to a call at 6:14 p.m. She had been stabbed to death in her home at 2917 Cedarwood Drive.

Burns’s husband – Timothy W. Burns, 51, has been charged with her murder. Timothy Burns was taken to the hospital Friday night and remained hospitalized on Sunday. Police had not released further details by Sunday night.

Burns is a former Durham police officer. A former D.A.R.E. officer and a 16-year veteran of the force, Burns left the Durham Police Department after suffering debilitating injuries in a 1999 automobile accident.
