Kearney H. Andrews: Free beer ads?

November 11, 2013

I am an old, crusty curmudgeon whose career was in advertising, broadcasting and marketing. I love The News & Observer and its reporting, but please allow me to make a critical observation: I read in the Oct. 25 business story “McClatchy revenues drop” that the third-quarter revenues for The N&O’s parent company, McClatchy Co., fell 4.2 percent.

There’s a way the news side of your organization can help reduce the losses. Have you measured the unpaid lineage given by your writers to craft brewers/micro-brewers? I’m sure these beer makers and their consumers love the free publicity that appears in The N&O pages almost every day.

Also – and this is a moral issue – isn’t my newspaper encouraging the “younger” generation to spend their money and time drinking more alcoholic beverages as they eat more pizza and wings? What a waste.
