Wakefield makes a big jump from No. 7 in The News & Observer high school football poll to No. 2 with its thrilling 34-31 victory over Leesville Road in the game that decided the Cap Eight 4A regular-season championship last Friday.

The Wolverines leaped ahead of No. 3 Middle Creek, which defeated Fuquay-Varina 28-14 to finish unbeaten in the Southwest Wake 4A, because Wakefield beat Middle Creek 34-24 in a head-to-head matchup with the Mustangs on Sept. 20.

Wakefield’s move is a testament to the strength of the Cap Eight. The league has four teams in the top dozen.

Orange slips from No. 2 to No. 8 after a 55-41 loss to Southern Durham because of the general overall balance in the top 10.

Knightdale’s grip on the top place seemed shaky during a 30-21 win over East Wake, but the Knights held on keep the No. 1 ranking.
