Former Durham police officer jailed on murder charge

— A former Durham police officer was taken from the hospital Tuesday to the Durham County Jail, officially arrested and charged with murder in the death of his wife last week.

Timothy Burns, 51, who left the Durham Police Department in the 1990s, is accused of stabbing Maxine Burns, 50, to death on Nov. 8 in their 2917 Cedarwood Drive home.

Burns also was injured in what investigators believe was an attempt to commit suicide and was hospitalized.

He is being held without bond.
