Marty Ingram: Hawke influenced many outside politics

November 13, 2013

I was very appreciative of Jim Jenkins’ Nov. 7 column “Smilin’ Jack’s very own GOP.” Jenkins did a very good job of educating me about of a lot of things I didn’t know about Jack Hawke on a professional level. I want to comment on the man outside the political arena.

My friends and I played baseball and basketball for Jack for over a decade, and no one would never have a clue what he did for a living because all he cared about on those nights and weekends was us. Jack was quick to teach, slow to anger and always encouraging to each of us. I am 45 years old, and he still is a huge inspiration to me.

I don’t care which side of the aisle a person sits on (red or blue), we need a million more like him. I hope that my children can find a person like that in the sports/life world whom they will be talking about and looking up to 30 years from now. Everyone needs their parents in that role, as mine were and are, but everyone needs a “Jack Hawke,” too. Thanks, Jack, we will miss you.
