Surry County judge announces appeals court candidacy

Posted on November 13, 2013

A district court judge who presides in Surry and Stokes counties announced Wednesday he will run for state Court of Appeals.

Judge William F. Southern III of King is seeking the seat being vacated by Judge Bob Hunter, who announced in August that he will not run for re-election next year.

Wake County Superior Court Judge Lucy Inman has also said she plans to run for Hunter’s seat.

Southern was an assistant district attorney before becoming a judge in 2008. He is a North Carolina native who attended UNC-Chapel Hill before getting a law degree at Texas Southern University.

Election to the appeals court is non-partisan, although party affiliation often becomes an issue. Southern is a registered Republican.
