    • Grammy-winning Steep Canyon Rangers play Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro Friday, with up-and-coming bluegrassers Mipso opening. Also Friday, the Red Clay Ramblers perform at Durham’s Carolina Theatre.

Jake Shimabukuro has embraced the ukulele in ways that Arthur Godfrey and Tiny Tim could never have imagined. The native Hawaiian was not well known beyond his home state until a video of him playing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went YouTube viral in 2006. Shimabukuro transposed the iconic tune from six-string to four-string classic in a stunning display of virtuosity. A documentary film, “Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings,” has aired on PBS, and he has appeared on “A Prairie Home Companion,” “The Today Show,” and other television and radio shows.

On Wednesday, the artist brings his ukulele and virtuosity to the ArtsCenter in Carrboro. For details: artscenterlive.org.
