Underground gas leak closes daycare center, street in Apex

— Children were evacuated from a daycare center in Apex on Monday morning after a large underground natural gas line began leaking, Apex police said.

Children from the Bright Horizons facility on Shepherd’s Vineyard Drive were moved to the nearby Eva Perry Library, police Capt. Anne Stephens said.

Firefighters were directing traffic for parents who wanted to pick up their children.

Shepherd’s Vineyard Drive was closed, Stephens said.

Employees in businesses there were staying inside.

Police said they did not what caused the 4.5-inch gas line to begin leaking.

Firefighters said workers were able toshut off the line at about noon.
