Durham’s The Cookery is hosting the inaugural Rent Party fundraising event for the nonprofit Housing for New Hope at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The event is a play on the “rent parties” during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s when folks gathered for an evening of music, dancing and food and passed the hat to help pay the rent. In that spirit, Saturday’s event will raise money for the Durham-based nonprofit that helps families and individuals who have experienced homelessness in Orange and Durham counties.

The Cookery event will feature live music by the Mint Julep Jazz Band, dancing, an open bar and appetizers. Tickets cost $50. To purchase, call 919-489-6282 or go to hnhrentparty.eventbrite.com.

The Cookery is at 1101 W. Chapel Hill St.
