Native American foodways at N.C. Museum of History this weekend

Food traditions and demonstrations will be a part of this weekend’s 18th annual American Indian Heritage Celebration at the N.C. Museum of History in downtown Raleigh.

Members of the Occaneechi-Saponi tribe will be grinding corn and have a foodways display in the museum lobby from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

Cookbook author Gloria Barton Gates will conduct a cooking demonstration and offer a talk from 2-2:30 p.m. Saturday. Gates, a Lumbee, has written, “The Scuffletown Cookbook: Lumbee Indian Recipes of Yesteryear,” and is working on a new book, “A Time to Dance: Recipes and Regalia.” Gates’ talk will be in the Cardinal Room in the SECU Education Center.
