The Station now open in downtown Raleigh

Niall Hanley, owner of the area’s Hibernian pubs and a partner in a number of other restaurants, has teamed up with former Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinsky to open The Station at Person Street. Located in a refurbished Amoco station on the edge of the historic Oakwood neighborhood, the restaurant offers an eclectic menu in a colorful, casual setting with ample seating indoors and out (where wood-burning fire pits should add several days to the patio season calendar).

But the owners aren’t just relying on the charm of the place and a well-stocked bar (with a draft beer selection that includes a solid selection of local brews) to fill the barstools and picnic tables.

They’ve hired chef Scott Jankovictz, formerly of The Market, to whip up an eclectic menu of starters, soups, salads and sandwiches that’s a decided notch above the pub norm. Light bites cover the spectrum from hot black bean dip to chipotle popcorn chicken tenders to quinoa salad with blueberries, pecans and goat cheese in a pink peppercorn vinaigrette. The Station chili is made with steak and topped with hoop cheddar cheese and sour cream.

Sandwiches cover a similarly broad spectrum, from sloppy Joe to smoked salmon BLT to banh mi to a grilled cheese featuring house-made beer cheese and caramelized onions on sourdough, griddled in brown butter. A kids’ menu is available, and a sweet tooth selection that includes the likes of root beer float and deep fried candy bar caters to the kid in all of us.

The Station (701 N. Person St.; 919-977-1567; stationraleigh.com) is open daily from11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
