Former Durham County officer accused of sexual act with inmate

— A former Durham County detention officer was arrested Thursday for engaging in a sexual activity with an inmate, which is a felony.

Matthew Ethelbert Toney, 59, had worked for the Durham County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years before his firing Nov. 8, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities allege the sexual activity happened in January.

The sheriff’s office investigated the case as a personnel matter and as a criminal matter. Toney was arrested Thursday at his home on Bermuda Court in Durham. Toney posted a $30,000 bond hours later, according to the sheriff’s office.
