Three killed in Johnston County crash

From staff and wire reportsNovember 24, 2013

— Three Willow Spring men were killed Saturday night when the 1997 Jaguar they were riding in veered off a country road, apparently at high speed, and smashed into a tree, according to a state Highway Patrol officer.

The accident occurred just before 10 p.m. on Dupree Road, just over the Johnston County line from Wake, near Angier.

The car was traveling west when it went off the road over the right shoulder.

Killed were the driver, Douglas Ray Baldwin, 46, and passengers Willie James McNair, 55, and Tony Ray Collins, 38. Only McNair was wearing a seat belt, the Highway Patrol said.

Excessive speed appeared to be a contributing factor, said 1st Sgt. R.P. Hooks said. The car split in two when it struck the tree.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, and the crash was still under investigation Sunday.
