The Daily Planet Café at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences will host the 8th annual Memories for Marcus toy drive and fundraiser from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 4.

Attendees will enjoy a buffet meal at the downtown Raleigh cafe for a $20 donation or by bringing a new, unwrapped toy. (Suggested toys include: rattles, pacifiers, musical toys, movies, video games, nail polish and journals.) The event also will include door prizes and a silent auction.

Proceeds from the event will benefit WakeMed Children’s Hospital through the WakeMed Foundation. All toys will be given to children hospitalized during the holiday season.

Memories for Marcus is named after Marcus Figueroa, a 17-month-old child who died unexpectedly in early December 2005. His mother, Margie Tysor Figueroa, explained in an email that her family had already bought many Christmas presents for Marcus and so her dad suggested donating the toys to the hospital.

The next year, her family and friends were planning to again donate toys again in Marcus' memory when a friend who worked for Rocky Top Hospitality mentioned the toy drive to his boss, Dean Ogan. Ogan, who owns Rocky Top Hospitality, offered one of his restaurants as a venue for the event and has ever since.
