Estero, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kelsey Barlow contributed 17 points as the Illinois-Chicago Flames defeated the San Diego Toreros, 74-70, in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Barlow notched a career-high in points and added seven rebounds with four assists. Jake Wiegand had his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as Illinois-Chicago (2-3) snapped a two-game skid.
The Flames shot 41.5 percent from the field with four players scoring in double digits. Their bench also scored 18 points in the win.
Johnny Dee finished with a game-high 19 points and Dennis Kramer had 13 points and eight rebounds as the Toreros (5-1) were handed their first loss of the season.
Thomas Jacobs scored on a layup and a free throw shot to put San Diego up 31-28 with 2:25 left in the first half, but after a layup from Ahman Fells, Gabe Snider hit a shot from beyond the arc to give the Flames a 33-31 going into the break.
Trailing by five with five seconds remaining, Christopher Anderson drained a 3-pointer to get the Toreros within two, but Barlow added two shots from the foul line to account for the final score.
