Rematches litter playoffs for Triangle's high school football teams

Friday’s N.C. High School Athletic Association football playoffs will have a familiar feeling when six of the seven area schools that won in the second round will face rematches of regular-season games.

The rematches almost guarantee the area will have two teams in the 4AA Eastern final on Dec. 6 and one in the 3AA Eastern final the same night.

The only way that won’t happen is if a winning team is ruled ineligible.

One team from Wake County – either Wake Forest, Millbrook, Garner or Middle Creek – will play in the NCHSAA 4AA title game at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 at N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium.

Knightdale (11-1), which will play Friday at Scotland County (13-0), still is alive in the 4A playoffs. The 4A final will be at at 3 p.m. Dec. 14 at Carter-Finley Stadium.

In the 4AA rematches Friday night, Middle Creek (11-2) will be at home against Garner (10-3) and Millbrook (10-3) at home against Wake Forest (10-3).

Garner won a nonconference game at home against Middle Creek 21-16 on the first night of the regular season Aug.23. Wake Forest beat Millbrook 31-25 on Oct.4 in a Cap Eight 4A game.

The 3AA rematch will have Orange (12-1) trying to avenge a 55-41 loss to Southern Durham (11-2) from Nov. 8.
