Giants to re-sign Vogelsong

San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants added the final piece to their projected 2014 rotation Friday, agreeing to terms with Ryan Vogelsong on a one-year contract.

The move, which will become official once a physical exam is completed next week, comes less than a month after the Giants declined a $6.5 million option on Vogelsong for 2014. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the veteran right-hander will receive a lower base salary on the new deal, but it includes incentives that can earn him in excess of that previous figure.

Vogelsong struggled for much of last season, posting a 4-6 record along with a 5.73 earned run average over 19 starts and missing more than two months with a fractured right hand. He had been one of San Francisco's more reliable starters over the prior two years, putting together a 13-7 mark with a 2.71 ERA in 2011 and winning a career-best 14 games while producing a 3.37 ERA the following season.

The 36-year-old also shined during the Giants' run to their latest World Series title in 2012, going 3-0 with an outstanding 1.09 ERA over four starts that postseason.

Vogelsong is expected to round out a starting five that also includes returnees Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum along with free-agent acquisition Tim Hudson.

The Giants have been quite active during the early portion of this offseason, having also re-signed Lincecum and lefty specialist Javier Lopez in addition to adding Hudson. The team gave outfielder Hunter Pence a five-year contract extension on the final day of the regular season as well.
