DHHS Twitter town hall on mental health

Posted by Lynn Bonner on December 2, 2013

There were two ways to read the state Department of Health and Human Services' Twitter town hall on mental health Monday afternoon. You could watch @NC_DHHS, where mental health division director Dave Richard answered questions about the Mental Health Crisis Solution Initiative. Or, you could search #ncmentalhealth, to find questions about expanding Medicaid and a few pointed comments.

The initiative is a plan DHHS is coming up to reduce emergency room trips for people with mental illness.

Richard tweeted that the state is serious about finding ways to help young children with mental health issues, that addressing addiction and substance abuse is one of Gov. Pat McCrory's top priorities, and that the initiative won't be just another report.

Using #ncmentalhealth, several people tweeted about expanding Medicaid, and there were a few comments about young, well-paid DHHS staff.

Richard answered about a dozen questions - none about Medicaid expansion or salaries.

News & Observer is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
