Police release name of Durham man hit by train

— Police have released the name of a man who was killed by a train east of downtown Durham on Monday afternoon.

Joseph Mewborn, 20, of Durham, was walking with a friend when he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train at 12:20 p.m. near Pettigrew and Plum streets, said Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His friend was not injured.

The train, which was occupied by 85 passengers and three Amtrak employees, was traveling toward downtown Durham when the accident occurred, according to police. No one on the train was injured.
