Forrest Smith: Spend now, save later on bridge

December 5, 2013

The closing of the Bonner Bridge has brought with it the predictable chorus blaming environmentalists for holding up the replacement of the bridge (“Group blasted over bridge delay,” Dec. 5 news article).

Wouldn’t it be more reasonable, when environmental concerns are initially raised, to address them at the time and spend what it takes to preserve the environment rather than ignoring the impacts of short-sighted decisions and targeting environmental preservation as a scapegoat?

Saving money now, to ensure re-election, will only lead to higher costs in the future, assuming there is anybody left in the future to pay the price.
