John E. Mattson: It’s all relative

December 7, 2013

Regarding the Nov. 28 letter saying Barack Obama is inexperienced and basically not qualified for the job as president: I say, consider the alternatives – McCain/Palin in 2008 and Romney/Ryan in 2012. McCain showed his lack of judgment by picking know-nothing Sarah Palin (self-titled Mama Grizzly) for his running mate. Can one imagine her a heartbeat away from the presidency? And McCain would have had boots on the ground in Libya and Syria. (Remember on the “Letterman” show when he sang “Bomb, bomb Iran” to the tune of the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann”? And remember the 47 percent, whom Romney wrote off as a bunch of freeloaders? As for Ryan, again a heartbeat away, his policies on Social Security, taxation and vouchers for Medicare would have been disastrous for a large segment of the country.

Again, I say consider the alternatives. If the Republicans think they can do better, I have not seen any evidence of it, judging by the candidates they run and the policies they espouse. Obama was the best choice.
