Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner has been named the NHL's first star of the week for the week ending Dec. 8, the league announced Monday.

Skinner scored five goals and earned one assist in the Canes' victories over the Washington Capitals, Nashville Predators and San Jose Sharks. He notched his first career hat trick with three goals in the 5-2 victory against Nashville on Thursday.

Skinner, who recently was moved to Eric Staal's line with Tuomo Ruutu, leads Carolina with nine goals this season despite missing 11 of the team’s 30 games due to injury.
