Katherine Holmes: Huertas deserve answers

December 11, 2013

I was appalled at the City of Durham’s legal authorities’ lack of respect for Jesus Huerta’s family by not informing them immediately why their son died in custody (“Family of teen who died in custody wants answers,” Dec. 7 news article). We all had a right to know. What were they covering up?

That child was in their custody and died in their care and that department should be responsible for the expenses of burying him properly. I want to know what these authorities would have done if it were one of their own children who died in the backseat of that car.

That boy’s family entrusted his life in the authorities’ hands by turning him in when he was doing something he should not have, something minor in most respects.

Why are the Durham authorities hiding the facts from us? What is there to be afraid of in telling us what really happened?
