Alice K. Leder: No religion at ballet

December 11, 2013

I’m all for religion and the practice of it. I have a religion also. But when someone’s faith interferes with my rights, that’s not tolerable.

I was enjoying the ballet (Handel’s “Messiah,” a great piece of work). As the hallelujah choral and dancing began, two rows of people stood up in front of me! I paid for my tickets as much as they did, but they blocked me from watching the dancers. I was so upset, I hardly could enjoy the rest.

I could understand their actions if this were a church or private club but not in the public Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. Next time they want to honor their lord, they need to get tickets in the last row or just move to the back!
