SELMA — A 72-year-old man was struck and killed by a van on Interstate 95 near Selma on Wednesday evening.
Arnold Newsome Jr. was standing either in the highways median or in the northbound left lane just before 6:30 p.m., according to Trooper Christopher Bell. He was struck by a full-size passenger van.
No one saw anything before the impact, so no one knows if he was trying to cross, Bell said.
Newsome was declared dead on the scene. Police plan no charges against the vans driver.
Newsome did not have a permanent residence, but he has family in Goldsboro, Bell said. Newsomes son reported that he had been drinking fairly heavily in recent days, but its unclear whether he was intoxicated at the time of his death, according to Bell
