Pedestrian struck and killed on I-95 near Selma

From staff reportsDecember 11, 2013

— A 72-year-old man was struck and killed by a van on Interstate 95 near Selma on Wednesday evening.

Arnold Newsome Jr. was standing either in the highway’s median or in the northbound left lane just before 6:30 p.m., according to Trooper Christopher Bell. He was struck by a full-size passenger van.

“No one saw anything before the impact, so no one knows if he was trying to cross,” Bell said.

Newsome was declared dead on the scene. Police plan no charges against the van’s driver.

Newsome did not have a permanent residence, but he has family in Goldsboro, Bell said. Newsome’s son reported that he had been drinking “fairly heavily” in recent days, but it’s unclear whether he was intoxicated at the time of his death, according to Bell
