RALEIGH — A Raleigh man faces two felony charges following a high-speed chase and crash near Raleigh-Durham International Airport earlier this week.
Christian Marquez Lewis, 24, fled RDU with $2,000 in stolen luggage just before his car flipped across Glenwood Avenue on Tuesday afternoon, according to an arrest report. The airport authority now says it is investigating a potential connection to at least three other reported bag thefts.
Airport police suspect that Lewis, of 5809 Parkchester Road in Raleigh, snatched luggage from a carousel after a Southwest Airlines flight arrived just before 2 p.m. Tuesday. Lewis took clothing, jewelery and a booster seat, according to an arrest report.
He fled the baggage area after a passenger confronted him, then left the airport in a 2009 Ford Focus, with officers in pursuit, according to an airport authority spokesman. The car was traveling about 75 mph when he attempted to exit Interstate 540 onto Glenwood Avenue, just outside the airport, according to Raleigh police.
Lewis lost control and slid off the exit ramp and across two lanes of Glenwood before hitting a concrete median and flipping into the avenues central pair of lanes, according to the accident report. Lewis was hospitalized with minor injuries, according to the report, and booked into the Wake County Detention Center later that day.
On Wednesday, police charged him with felony larceny and felony fleeing to elude arrest, according to county records.
He was being held Thursday on $100,000 bond.
