Could Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane end up running for Richard Burr’s U.S. Senate seat?

That’s a possibility floated in an article published this week by Washington political website CQ Roll Call. The piece speculates about potential candidates in 2016, when Burr is up for reelection. Apparently no one’s sure whether he’ll seek a third term.

Citing unnamed “local Democrats,” the article names four potential candidates who could run against Burr or whoever the GOP nominates to succeed him.

McFarlane, an independent with backing from Raleigh Democrats, is on the list, joined by state treasurer Janet Cowell and two General Assembly members from Raleigh: Sen. Josh Stein and Rep. Grier Martin.

Since she was reelected in October, rumors have been swirling around Raleigh that she might not seek a third mayoral term in 2015. But McFarlane says she’s happy to be mayor and has no plans to step down or seek higher office anytime soon.
