Lane Tracy: Black Friday costs

December 12, 2013

Once again The N&O and The Associated Press have amused us with financial news. On Dec. 1 you published the report “Thanksgiving takes bite out of Black Friday” that said “combined spending on Thanksgiving and Black Friday ... rose 2.3 percent to $12.3 billion.” But that was just consumer spending. What you did not report was the increased cost of these sales.

Opening the stores on both days obviously cost more in wages and electricity, not to mention the transportation costs of the workers, than Black Friday alone would have cost. Did the retailers really come out ahead? We await the data.
