Tip leads Raleigh police to man charged in four holdups, two attempts

From staff reportsDecember 13, 2013

— A tip from the public after police distributed a suspect’s picture led detectives to charge a man in four holdups and two attempted holdups.

Officers arrested Jimmy Christopher Carden, 41, Thursday.

Arrest warrants charged Carden, of 4004 Wingate Drive, with three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of common law robbery and two counts of attempted robbery.

Carden was being held in lieu of $750,000 bail for a court appearance Friday,

Police had asked the news media to distribute a picture Dec. 9, and police spokesman Jim Sughrue said, “A tip that resulted from news coverage of the cases was instrumental in identifying Carden as the suspect. He was taken into custody without incident ... at his residence.”

The most recent incidents were two attempted robberies within minutes of each other in the same block of Falls of Neuse Road, arrest warrants charged.

There were armed robberies at an Ace Hardware store on Nov. 7, a Subway store on Nov. 4 and a Kerr Drug store on Oct. 28.

In each case, the robber had a black, semiautomatic handgun, police said.

There also was a Nov. 29 robbery at Cameron Clothing Co. when no weapon was shown.
