Wake Forest kicker Chad Coates thinks about kicking

From staff reportsDecember 13, 2013

Wake Forest High kicker Zach Coates has a simple philosophy about important attempts: He doesn’t think about them.

Coates booted a field goal at the end of the fourth overtime to give the Cougars a 27-24 victory over Millbrook in a third-round playoff game. He momentarily didn’t know why his teammates were celebrating.

“All I was thinking about was keeping my head down, making solid contact and following through,” he said. “Everybody was jumping up and down, and it took a second to understand. I hadn’t thought of it in those terms.”

Coates made a game-winning field goal last week in a 24-23 semifinal win over Middle Creek.

The Cougars play undefeated Charlotte Mallard Creek on Saturday at 7 p.m., at N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4AA championship game.

So what will Coates, a soccer player participating in football for the first time this year, think if called upon to attempt a big kick in the state finals.

“I’ll be thinking, head down, make solid contact and follow through,” he said.
