Bald Head ferry still grounded after salvage effort

From staff reportsDecember 18, 2013

— A private company failed Wednesday morning to free its ferry from a sandbar near Southport.

The Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure ran aground on Tuesday morning, not far from Battery Island and the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Fourteen people were injured, including one with a potentially serious injury, according to local authorities.

At about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, as high tide washed over the sand, Bald Head Island Transportation “attempted to re-float the Adventure,” but failed, according to the Coast Guard. A Coast Guard spokesman said that in Wednesday’s salvage effort the company waited to see whether high tide would lift the boat off the sand.

The company will submit plans to the Coast Guard before it takes any further action, according to the Coast Guard. An update on the condition of those injured Tuesday wasn’t immediately available.
