Mike Reid: GOP plan to raise wages

December 18, 2013

The Dec. 12 letter “They had time” raised some good points, and I agree that the minimum wage is long overdue for a major increase. The Democrats were never able to figure out a way to offset the cost to employers of raising the minimum wage so as to avoid mass layoffs.

The Republicans have come up with the perfect solution with their tax reform bill. This windfall tax cut for the rich should offset most of the cost of raising the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 would get many people off of state subsidies, generate more sales tax from more money being spent and also increase the size of income tax payments to the state. The other benefit is that most businesses should see more sales traffic and higher profits.

It’s amazing that the Republicans have created the perfect circumstances for raising the minimum wage with minimal blow back. All business owners need to be reminded that there is no money to be made from people who have none and that the only way for people to have money is to be well paid.

Let’s hope the Republicans have the backbone to raise the minimum wage.
