Bowling Green, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Trency Jackson paced four teammates in double figures with 16 points. as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers held off a late surge by the Southern Miss Golden Eagles to claim a 68-65 win at E.A. Diddle Arena.
George Fant and T.J. Price each scored 15 points for WKU (6-4), while Chris Docks-Harrison netted 11 points.
For USM (9-2), which snapped a three-game winning streak, Jerrold Brooks put up 15 points on 5-of-8 from 3-point range. Neil Watson posted 13 points for the visitors, while Michael Craig had 12 points.
WKU attempted just 13 field goals in the first half, making seven (.538). It shot 13-of-15 from the free-throw line and held a 30-25 lead at the break.
The Hilltoppers led by 10 with under 15 minutes to play, but the Golden Eagles would not go quietly, as they cut their deficit to just one, 66-65, with 12 seconds left on a Craig layup. Jackson made a pair of free-throws on the other end for WKU, and USM could not get a final shot off before the buzzer sounded.
USM was impressive at the free-throw line, making 14-of-17, but WKU was outstanding at 26-of-30.
